MASS BALANCE ADDITIONS

Certified bio-based raw materials and fossil raw materials are physically mixed along the entire value chain, but are distinguished from one another by means of verifiable accounting. By recording the quantity of certified alternative raw materials used in the accounting system, the percentage of end products that can be labelled as ISCC-certified can be accurately determined. Certification in accordance with ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) using the mass balance method is a procedure that allows for the sustainable traceability of raw materials along the supply chain. It is used to prove that sustainable raw materials are present in a product in a proportional share.

What does "at least 65% renewable raw materials certified in accordance with the ISCC mass balance method" mean?

The mass balance method allows for the mixing of sustainable and non-sustainable raw materials, whereby the sustainable share is calculated. This means that not every kilogramme of Cremesso capsule plastic has to physically consist of certified raw materials – but the total quantity of all Cremesso capsules must comprise at least 65% renewable raw materials.

Principle of mass balancing according to ISCC:

  1. Raw material input: sustainable and non-sustainable raw materials enter the production system.
  2. Production and processing: both types of raw materials are processed and can be physically mixed.
  3. Balancing: the quantity of certified raw material is precisely documented.
  4. Product distribution: end products can be sold as ISCC-certified provided the amount of sustainable material is distributed in a mathematically correct way.
