The region surrounding the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda is known for its great ecological importance. For this reason, the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tropical climate and fertile soil in this unique mountain region offer ideal conditions for the cultivation of coffee, which has a long tradition here. Of about 3500 small plantations, 85% are run by local female farmers. Thanks to high-quality cultivation, the carefully hand-picked Arabica beans are among the best of its type.
The Bwindi cloud forests are located 160 km south of the Rwenzori Mountains. This spectacular natural environment offers the perfect habitat for native mountain gorillas. More so than any other gorilla species, mountain gorillas live predominantly on the ground, which also enables tourists to observe these fascinating apes at close range.Carefully conducted tourism is essential for the survival of these mountain gorillas, which are threatened with extinction. The money so earned is in turn used for reforestation of the forests for these threatened animals as well as for battling poaching.
